Insurance Services
Our Insurance Services Group, as its name suggests, serves the highly-specialized needs of insurance companies that conduct business in Indiana. Insurance companies typically have two very broad types of legal needs: one involves the insurance products they sell and their everyday relationships with regulators, policyholders, claimants and other insurance companies; the other involves their organization, operation and regulation as businesses, along with more complex relationships with policyholders, claimants and other insurance companies.
Through our Insurance Services Group, we work with representatives of stock and mutual insurance companies, and partially self-insured companies, on a wide range of corporate and regulatory issues. We help them identify and address potential problems in the language of their policies, and we help them resolve disputes arising from different interpretations of that language.
Disputes typically involve policyholders, third-party claimants or other insurance companies (generally in determination of responsibility for primary and secondary coverage). Many can be resolved through arbitration or mediation. Others can only be resolved through litigation. We have defended clients in local, state and federal trial and appellate courts, as well as in prosecuting their claims in cases of suspected arson or insurance fraud. We also represent client-companies, along with their brokers and agents, before the Indiana Department of Insurance, in investigations of claims of unfair or improper practices.
Our work often requires close coordination with our clients' in-house counsel, with attorneys in other practice groups within the firm, with attorneys retained by clients to represent them in other states, and with attorneys retained by others whose interests coincide with the interests of our clients.
